POLIN TSAREV
Hi, I’m Polin and I like working with wood.
Ever since my school days, when I carved small hollows into branches and called them spoons, the desire to work with wood stayed somewhere in the back of my mind. At some point, I found a way to study it and to practice.
I guess for me this practice is about contact with nature.
I try to think everything through before I begin, yet the material always leaves space to improvise. In fact, what I’m trying to do most of all is keep this sense of spontaneity.
I work mostly with hand tools. It’s probably also about staying in touch with the process. It allows me to work at a pace that makes it possible to change direction.
Sometimes it can feel limiting, but in general I like this logical component — thinking about what I have and what I can do with it.
I try to remind myself that the more mistakes I make, the more I learn.
And also, that when I’m tired, it’s probably not the best time to work with sharp tools.
